The 120th anniversary of Gafur Ghulam celebrated in Israel

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz published an article titled "To revive the Sacred Temple mossy stones" dedicated to the life and work of the national poet of Uzbekistan Gafur Gulyam, as well as the translation of his poem "I am a Jew" from Russian into Hebrew by Amnon Ginzai-Ginsberg, Dunyo news agency reports.

One of the great poets of Uzbekistan, Gafur Ghulam (1903-1966), recently turned 120 years old. He was born into a poor family in the capital Tashkent and achieved a lot on his own. The poet was repeatedly awarded state awards.

His poems were written under the strong influence of the Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. During World War II, he mobilized his poetry to fight Nazism and fascism, and the poem "I am a Jew" is written in this spirit.

He praises the Jewish people and the antiquity of their culture compared to the racist culture of Nazi Germany, and identifies Judaism with communism. Immigrants from Uzbekistan in Israel took care to honor his name in the square named after him, in the city of Kiryat Gat.

It should be noted that Haaretz is Israel’s oldest daily newspaper, published in Hebrew and English in print and electronic formats.
