Tested varieties of tomatoes showed resistance to the hot climate of Bukhara

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Scientists at the Research Institute of Vegetables, Melons and Potatoes under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan are conducting research on growing tomato varieties suitable for the soil and climatic conditions of Bukhara region. 

Varieties "Bobkat F1", "Tomsk F1", "Lojan F1", "Red stone", "Seraj F1", "Independence-28", "Rio-Grande" successfully withstood the hot weather conditions of July and showed good results during the tests.

According to the scientists of the institute, the tomato, which is the main vegetable crop, is a plant that loves coolness. Therefore, at air temperatures above + 40 ° C, it ceases to grow and develop. As a result of intense heat, some parts of the fruit burn in the sun, and the flowers fall off. This leads to a decrease in the quality of tomatoes.

“This year, the air temperature in some areas of Bukhara region, especially in Jondar district, was + 45-47 ° C, which required special attention to tomatoes. To save them, we shaded the ground with dry corn stalks and light-stemmed plants like straw 5 cm thick, and watered at night to preserve moisture,” said Gulshoda Saidova, doctoral student at the Research Institute of Vegetables, Melons and Potatoes.

It is worth noting that after a strong heat, some varieties of tomato hybrids grow and bloom. To date, 45-50 tons of tomatoes per hectare have been harvested on the experimental plot. Scientists intend to harvest until late autumn.

In the course of ongoing research, scientists from the Research Institute of Vegetables, Melons and Potatoes in Bukhara region select promising varieties based on a comprehensive study of tomato in conditions of slightly saline soils. Cultivation technologies are being improved under various irrigation regimes and fertilizer application rates.

The goal is to select a salt-, heat- and drought-resistant variety and develop a technology for its cultivation. As well as the creation in the future of a variety suitable for the climatic conditions of the Bukhara region.

These scientific studies are planned to be carried out at the Bukhara Scientific Experimental Station of the Institute during 2022-2024.
