Technogenic Accident in Tashkent: Hydrogen Peroxide Leak at Chemical Facility
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In the early hours of July 21, a technogenic accident occurred in the Almazar district of Tashkent — a hydrogen peroxide leak was reported at one of the city’s industrial warehouses, according to Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES).
Around 1 a.m., videos began circulating on social media showing a dense white fog spreading through parts of the city. Residents complained of a strong chemical odor and breathing difficulties. Dozens of fire brigades, ambulances, and units specializing in radiological, chemical, and biological protection (RCBP) were immediately dispatched to the site.
Two and a half hours later, the MES confirmed a hydrogen peroxide leak. Emergency specialists began cleanup efforts and chemical neutralization of the affected area. Authorities stated that the situation is under control and all relevant agencies remain on site conducting response operations.
The ministry noted that more detailed information will be shared once the investigation into the cause and circumstances of the incident is completed.
Hydrogen peroxide in high concentrations poses a serious health hazard. Its vapors can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Exposure may lead to chemical burns, pulmonary edema, and severe internal injuries if inhaled or ingested.
