Uzbekistan 26/03/2008 Teachers from Tashkent discuss gender equality in secondary education
Uzbekistan works on implementation of international standards in gender equality, acknowledging it as one of the important indicators of development. Uzbekistan ratified the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), but its regulations are not widely spread among population and staff of educational system. As a result, the educational events play a key role in promotion of gender equality and the CEDAW regulations.

The joint project of the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan and UNDP "Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan" organized the workshop. The project goals are to support and build the capacity of the government, civil society and mass media in reducing the gender gaps via raising awareness of and implementing the recommendations of the UN CEDAW Committee to Uzbekistan. It is envisaged to achieve the goal via building the capacity of teachers in developing of the curriculum with the special attention to gender sensitiveness and mutual respect.

Ms Malika Inakova, project manager of "The Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan", said: "The current workshop for teachers helps to promote and implement regulation of the CEDAW. Over 27 teachers from various schools from Tashkent participated in the event and we hope they will share their knowledge among their colleagues and students."

She said the workshop focused on identification of teachers, who can promote gender awareness and the CEDAW regulations in the society, change gender stereotypes among students and the community.

Inakova added that the successful participants will be attracted by the project to hold series of educational trainings in schools and regional branches of public education, which will help to promote the CEDAW regulation among young generation.
