Metsu’s side suffered a 4-0 defeat to the Uzbeks in Tashkent on Saturday but of more concern was that they failed to really threaten throughout the game.

Qatar’s hopes of a positive result at the National Stadium in Manama have been dealt a blow due to a crippling injury list with defender Bilal Rajab suspended after being sent off against Uzbekistan while Marconi Amaral is out after injuring his Achilles tendon in the same game.

Defender Ibrahim Maged will return to the side after missing the previous match through suspension while Abdulla Koni, Mostafa Abdulla and Ali Nasser are all still out through different injuries.

“We lost the game against Uzbekistan due to unfamiliar circumstances,” said Metsu.

“The injury of Marconi Amaral and Bilal Rajab’s red card played a major role in that defeat.

“Despite the defeat to Uzbekistan, we still have a chance to qualify for the World Cup as we can still get third place in the group.”

Qatar’s defeat at the weekend meant they dropped to the bottom of Group A but are level with Bahrain and Uzbekistan on four points.

A win for either side on Wednesday would go along way to getting their qualification hopes back on track and Metsu is confident his side will get the required result.

“We have no other option but to win the game against Bahrain if we want to get the third place in the group and have a chance to qualify,” he added.

“We will work on the mistakes that led to the defeat to Uzbekistan.”

Bahrain are also looking to get a confidence boosting win having lost 1-0 on Saturday to Japan to see their hopes of a top-two finish effectively ended.

“We have no other chance now but to fight for the third place in the qualifiers,” said coach Milan Macala.

“Japan and Australia are now closer to claiming the first two spots and our only hope now is to claim the third place.

“The defeat against Japan is not the end of the qualifiers for us but it would have been better to have got a point from that game.”

Bahrain, who returned from Tokyo on Sunday, will welcome the return of striker Ala’a Hubail -who missed the match against Japan - while midfielder Abdulla Omar is suspended after receiving his second yellow card in the qualifiers against Japan.
