Tashkent hosts roundtable on territorial planning
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 16 September, Tashkent hosted a roundtable titled “Territorial planning and city statistics in small and medium cities: problems and perspectives”, which was organized by the Center for Economic Research and the UNDP Regional Office in Bratislava.

Specialists, representing various ministries and departments, international organizations, NGOs and expert community, participated at the event.

Implementation of complex of measures on industrialization and modernization of the country requires accounting main trends and perspectives of urbanization process. Uzbekistan was able to keep potential of cities as industrial developed centers despite all problems.

But efficiency of solving industrial programmes on modernization and technical re-equipment in small and medium cities will depend on maximal use of potential of local bodies and businesses at forming and implementing long-term regional programmes of social-economic development. At the same time, it is impossible to improve activity of local governments on planning for medium and long-term without improving statistic reports in local level.

The work of roundtable was directed at revealing ways of solving these issues. The event discussed issues of territorial planning and city statistics. Participants also considered experience foreign countries on regional and local planning.

Underlining important of discussed issues, participants underlined potential of statistic bodies allow to boost activity on collecting and processing of statistic information at local level, which will increase efficiency of formed programmes of social-economic development at the level of regions and cities. At the same time, it was said that monitoring of the MDGs in Uzbekistan should be optimized due to including new indicators and figures, adapted to conditions of Uzbekistan.
