Tashkent hosts event dedicated to use and protection of water resources
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- State Committee of Uzbekistan on nature protection, Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management of Uzbekistan, and Tashkent Irrigation and Reclamation Institute held a seminar “Use and protection of water resources in Uzbekistan: current state and ways of development”.

The event, which was held on 18 March 2013, is dedicated to World Water Day, marked annually on 22 March.

Representatives of Cabinet of Ministers, ministries and departments, public organizations, higher educational establishments and others participated at the event.

World Water Day has been observed on 22 March since 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly declared 22 March as World Day for Water. This day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Observance began in 1993 and has grown significantly ever since.

At the seminar, the participants discussed issues related to use and protection of water resources in the world and Uzbekistan. The participants discussed challenges and measures adopted in Uzbekistan, directed at improving water use.

It was noted that demand for water is increasing in Uzbekistan due to fast development of economy and growth of population number.

Currently, Uzbekistan has 55 water reservoirs, of which 30 are located in Amudarya basin and 25 in Syrdarya basin. Uzbekistan also possesses 500 natural lakes and 1,448 wells.

Demand for water in Uzbekistan is satisfied mainly due to underground waters (80%) and surface sources (20%).

Uzbekistan also works on diversification of agriculture, which helped to cut water use in agriculture sector from 64 billion cubic meters to 52 billion cubic meters a year.

In last ten year, Uzbekistan attracted over US$1 billion of foreign investments into water management system and implemented 20 large scale projects.
