Tashkent hosts conference on social initiatives in protecting health of mothers and children
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Social Indicatives Support Fund (SISF) in cooperation with the Ministry of Healthcare of Uzbekistan and the UNFPA organized a roundtable “Social initiatives in the area of health of mothers and children” on 19 April 2013.

The roundtable was organized within the project “Healthy Mother – Healthy Children” and aimed at improving activities and works of all project partners on raising awareness of population on reproductive health and healthy lifestyle, discussions actual problems, etc.

The event was attended by representatives of Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, its divisions, Senate and Legislative Chamber, international organizations, NGOs and others.

Mavlyuda Shirinova, chairperson of SISF, said that over 1.2 million people benefited from the project “Healthy Mother – Healthy Children”.

Asamidin Kamilov, deputy minister of healthcare of Uzbekistan, named the project “Healthy Mother – Healthy Children” as a national movement. Carl Kulessa, representative of UNFPA in Uzbekistan, said that in some countries it is difficult to discuss issues related to health of mothers and children and in Uzbekistan partnership with state and civil organizations gives positive results.

Over 40% of Uzbekistan’s population is children at the age of up to 14 and one fourth of population are women of fertility age.

The project “Healthy Mother – Healthy Children” has been implemented since 2007. The project is implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Healthcare of Uzbekistan and the UNFPA, as well as NGOs.

The project is aimed at raising knowledge of teenage girls on rational nutrition, preventing anemia, hygiene, preparing pregnant women to birth and children care.

It is implemented in all 14 regions of Uzbekistan, including Karakalpakstan. In last five years, number of the project beneficiaries exceeded 1.229 million people.
