Tanzila Narbayeva participates in the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 23-27 March 2024, the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is being held in Geneva, Switzerland. Hundreds of representatives of parliaments from around the world take part in the Assembly, which is held twice a year.

Inter-Parliamentary Union is a global organization of national parliaments founded over 130 years ago as the world's first multilateral political organization encouraging cooperation and dialogue among all countries.

Today the IPU consists of 180 national member parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies. The framework promotes democracy and helps parliaments become stronger, younger, greener, gender-balanced and more innovative institutions.

The 148th Assembly is organized within the framework of a general debate on the theme “Parliamentary Diplomacy: Building Bridges of Peace and Understanding”. The main emphasis is on creating a platform for delegates to discuss a common topic and exchange ideas on strengthening the activities of parliament in this direction.

Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbayeva put forward important proposals and initiatives in her speech.

The Chairperson of the Senate emphasized that in a rapidly changing and difficult to predict international situation and a lack of mutual understanding in interstate relations, the role and relevance of the parliaments of the countries of the world is increasing.

Fully supporting the conceptual principles of the Inter-Parliamentary Union aimed at strengthening parliamentary diplomacy, emphasis is placed on priority areas that should be given special attention.

Thus, it was especially noted that parliamentary diplomacy, as a key mechanism for strengthening trust between states, should play an important role in preventing conflicts, and parliaments should actively protect the rights of vulnerable groups of the population.

The attention of the participants is drawn to the importance of regional interaction, which helps to establish trusting relationships between parliamentarians and resolve common problems and challenges.

The Assembly is expected to adopt resolutions to address the social and humanitarian challenges associated with autonomous weapons systems and artificial intelligence, and partnerships to combat climate change: promoting access to affordable green energy and ensuring innovation, responsibility and equity.

It is also planned to adopt a final document on the general theme of the Assembly.
