Sustainable development amid demographic changes discussed in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Tashkent hosted a two-day international conference on “Sustainable Development Amid Demographic Changes: National and Foreign Experience”.

The conference was organized by the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan with the participation of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Research Institute “Family and Women.”

The conference was attended by leaders of the UN Population Fund, representatives of international organizations such as UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, as well as representatives of more than 40 parliaments and governments of almost 20 countries.

The main goal of the event was to develop recommendations on issues related to education, healthcare, labor markets, urbanization, caused by demographic changes.

Successful strategies and solutions were presented at the conference. Participants also exchanged experiences in developing inclusive and effective solutions based on facts.

Tanzila Narbayeva, the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, noted the relevance of the agenda for Uzbekistan and other countries. She emphasized the need to take appropriate measures for countries with growing populations and those with declining populations.

She also highlighted that Uzbekistan is actively working on creating economic opportunities and ensuring social protection for the growing population. Targeted measures based on the principle of “In the Name of Human Dignity” are being implemented in the country as part of the reforms.

Executive Director of the UN Population Fund Natalia Kanem, in a video address, noted that the issues and conclusions discussed at the conference contribute to ensuring sustainable demographic development in Uzbekistan.

The conference’s work was organized within three sessions: “Demographic Stability and Sustainable Development: Challenges and Opportunities,” “Demographic Stability and Human Capital: Adapting to Changes and Utilizing Opportunities,” and “Decade of Healthy and Long Life in Uzbekistan.”

The first session discussed advanced practices in creating economic opportunities for demographically sustainable development, including housing, labor rights and freedoms, as well as the development of social partnership in the labor market.

Issues related to the development of human capital in the context of demographic changes, strengthening social protection of the population, and the consistent continuation of reforms in education and healthcare were also discussed.
