Somdev leads seeds into second round at Tashkent Challenger
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Second seeded Somdev Devvarman fresh from his gold medal triumph at the Commonwealth Games , lead third seeded Fredrico Gil, fourth seeded Justin Brown, fifth seeded Karol Beck into the second round of the $125,000 Tashkent Challenger, an ATP Challenger series event being played at the Olympic tennis Stadium.

However the stars of the day were tall Croat Franco Skugor who upset Sixth seeded Konstantin Kravchuk of Russia, and local star Farrukh Dustov won a thriller against Laurent Recouderc of France.

On the second day of the event today the 23 year Skugor registered the first upset of the event scoring a 7-6(4),6-4 win over sixth seeded Russian and 130th ranked Konstatin Kravchuk. Wild card Farrukh Dustov the local favorite cheered by his home crowd played patchy tennis to score a 7-6(3),6-7(4),6-4 win over Laurent Recouderc and become the second Uzbek player to make it to the round of 16.

Second seeded Somdev Devvarman displayed clinical precision to outplay qualifier Ante Pavic of Croatia 6-2,6-4 in 1hour 20 mins, third seeded Frederico Gil of Portugal overcame some close moments scoring a 6-4,7-6(6) win over Spanish player Adrian Menendez- Maceiras.

Fourth seed Dustin Brown of Jamaica already a favorite with fans here gave a display of his unorthodox style scraping past German Simon Stadler 7-6(5),7-6(4) in 1 hour 25 mins. Fifth seeded German Karol Beck scored a easy 6-1, 6-1 win over qualifier Clemant Reix of France in just 54 minutes.

It was the 6ft 4inch and 170th ranked Croat Franco Skugor who emerged the star of the day who scored a 7-6(4),6-4 over 132nd ranked and 6th seeded Konstatin Kravchuk of Russia in a 1hour and 45 minute match.

"I was expecting a tough match", said Skugor whose record now stands 3-0 against Kravchuk. He added, "The match was even till the tiebreak but I played a few very good points in the tiebreak and again in the second set at 4-3 to break Kravchuk" .The Croat who has moved up from 900 at the beginning of the year to 170 in the rankings said, he hoped to keep the momentum and expected to do well at the event.

It was the local star Farrukh Dustov who provided cheer to the home crowds with tremendous display of back court tennis, just back from playing on clay , Dustov proved that he could be tough customer on the hard courts too out hitting Frenchman Laurent Recouderc 7-6(3),6-7(4),6-4 win in the longest match of the day spanning well over 2hrs .30 mins.

Both players looked evenly matched right through the match, Dustov broke Recouderc in the 2nd game in the first set , but lost his serve in the third game. Dustov who retuned solidly again broke the Frenchman in the 6th game to move to a 4-2 lead. But the tall Uzbek could not hold on to the lead for long losing his serve in the 7th game to let Recouderc come back and level scores at 4-4.

Both players held on to their serve to force a tie break, but Dustov hit some brave forehand down the line winners to clinch the first set in the tie break.

The second set Dustov looked the better player breaking the Frenchman in the 3rd game and again racing to a 4-2 lead, but some tentative tennis from the local player saw Recouderc come back and break Dustov in the 8th game to level scores and force another tiebreak at 6-6. this time it was Recouderc's turn to take the set and force the decider.

In the third set both players looked tired , with Dustov broken in the very first game , Recouderc looked like going for the kill racing to a 3-1 lead , but Dustov played a brilliant 6th game to break Recouderc after 3 deuces and level scores to 3-3.

Dustov held his serve at 4-4 to go up 5-4 and take a medical break. However in the 10th game Dustov played like man possessed hitting brilliant forehand winners to take the game at Love and the set at 6-4.

Dustov's other countrymen wildcard entrants Vaja Uzakov and young Sergey Shiplov could not make it to the second round falling to Ukrainian Ivan Sergeyev and Uladimir Ignatik of Belarus.
