Sports 24/09/2008 Shatskikh hails Kasimov appointment

Kasimov took over as the coach last week from Rauf Inileev and faces his first big test when the Central Asians, who have lost their first two matches in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying, play Japan away on October 15.

"I and Kasimov have played many games together for the national team," said Shatskikh.

"I think the team will benefit from this appointment."

The Uzbek striker also mentioned Kasimov’s footballing acumen.

"Kasimov has a winning spirit and great mentoring skills. All these combined with the respect he has among the players should unite the national squad," added Shatskikh.

Uzbekistan lost to Qatar 3-0 in their opening qualifier before going down by a solitary goal to Australia. The Uzbeks need to finish in the top-two among Bahrain, Australia, Qatar and Japan to make the 2010 World Cup Finals.
