Economy 04/07/2007 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation to establish Energy Club

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) will establish its own energy club. The decision was taken in Moscow at the first meeting of ministers responsible for the development of fuel and energy industry in the SCO framework.

The ministers decided to make energy cooperation more effective in order to ensure energy security of the member states, and accepted the need to harmonise their national energy strategies.

The energy club will include representatives of relevant government agencies, information and analytical centres, and big business. A High-Level Group will be its supreme body. Each state holding an observer status in the SCO may send two observers to the club.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a Eurasian regional alliance founded in 2001 by Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and China.
