The visit of the Globe is organized at the support of British Council in Uzbekistan, Ministry of Culture and Sport Affairs of Uzbekistan and creative-production union Uzbekteatr.

Jamilya Gulyamova, Deputy Director of British Council in Uzbekistan, said that the visit of Globe to Uzbekistan is conducted within the project Globe to Globe, which is dedicated to the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birthday.

On 23 April 2014, on the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birthday, Globe launched a two-year global tour with Hamlet play. The play will be demonstrated in all 205 states of the world.

She said that Shakespeare was always very popular in Uzbekistan. She said that the first staging of Hamlet in Uzbekistan was held 80 years ago. The visit of Globe theatre will give another opportunity to get in touch with Shakespeare’s works.

Jamilya Gulyamova said that within the visit Globe to Uzbekistan, it is planned to organize a theatre forum with participation of the Uzbek and British specialists to discuss role of theatre in modern world.

She said that British Council is planning to hold several master classes on actor skills among students and present a joint play on Shakespeare’s work in April 2016.

The Globe to Globe Hamlet will reinforce the Globe’s continuing commitment to internationalising Shakespeare following the runaway success of the 2012 ‘Globe to Globe’ festival. During the festival 110,000 people – 80% of whom were first-time visitors to the Globe – flocked to watch 37 works of Shakespeare performed in 37 different languages over just six weeks. This new tour will bring one of Shakespeare’s best-known plays to some of the most inaccessible places in the world.

The production is a young, fresh version of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of deferred revenge that teases out its latent streak of gallows humour and celebrates the exuberance and invention of its language. Just twelve actors will perform over two dozen parts on a stripped-down wooden stage in a comparatively brisk two hours and forty minutes. The play lasts two hours and 40 minutes.
