German forward Miroslav Klose was sent off in the 36th minute of the match for his second bookable offence, and after two minutes Milan Jovanovic had given Serbia the lead.

Germany had good chances to equalize, but they were unlucky this day. Podolski had chance to score from penalty, but Vladimir Stojkovic saved it.

It was Germany's first group-phase loss since a 2-0 defeat to Denmark in 1986.
