Uzbekistan 20/11/2008 Senate to hold plenary session on 4 December (Update)
Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A Council of Senate (upper house) of Oliy Majlis (parliament) of Uzbekistan held a session on 19 November.

Senate adopted a resolution on convocation of the sixteenth plenary session of the Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan on 4 December in Tashkent city.

The Senate will consider the state budget for 2009 and a number of laws. Among them are laws on introducing changes in legislative acts in connection with improvement of the implementation of the amnesty act, and in connection with improvement of the advocacy institute.

Other laws to be considered are on the rescue service and the rescuer’s status, and on introducing changes in the law on guarantees of activities of NGOs and in the law on insurance activities.

The senators will also consider laws on Uzbekistan’s joining the second optional protocol to the International pact on civil and political rights aimed at abolition of death penalty (New York, 15 December 1989) and the optional protocol to the Convention on the rights of the child related to children’s participation in armed conflicts and to trade in children, child prostitution and child pornography (New York, 25 May 2000).

The members of the Senate are expected to approve the law on Uzbekistan’s joining the Joint Convention on the safety of spent fuel management and on the safety of radioactive waste management (Vienna, 5 September 1997), as well as a number of other laws.

Also on the agenda are issues of introducing changes to the structure of the Supreme Court and the Higher Economic Court, appointment of ambassadors in foreign countries and other issues within the Senate’s competence.
