Senate approves bill to combat economic crimes and shadow economy

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — During a plenary session of the Senate, the law "On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Improve the System for Combating Economic Crimes" was discussed.

The bill aims to enhance legislation focused on protecting the interests of individuals, society, and the state from criminal offenses, as well as ensuring the rule of law and the inevitability of punishment. In this regard, extensive reforms are being implemented to strengthen the system for combating economic crimes.

Pursuant to Presidential Decree No. UP-11 of 16 January 2024, "On Measures to Improve State Oversight Mechanisms in the Sphere of Combating the Shadow Economy," additional responsibilities have been assigned to the Department for Combating Economic Crimes under the General Prosecutor’s Office. These include preventing violations of budget legislation, uncovering economic crimes, and conducting comprehensive investigations into such offenses.

The law introduces amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code and the Law "On Combating Corruption," clarifying the investigative powers of the Department regarding criminal cases. Additionally, changes have been made to the Code of Administrative Responsibility and the Budget Code, transferring certain powers of state financial control bodies to the State Financial Control Inspection of the Department.

Senators emphasized that the adoption of this law ensures legality, precision, and uniform application of legislative norms, while also providing a legal framework for judicial and legal reforms. The law was approved by the senators.
