Sanitary and Epidemiological committee clarifies situation regarding metapneumovirus infection

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Messages regarding metapneumovirus and claims about its greater danger than COVID-19 are circulating on social media.

The Sanitary and Epidemiological Committee of Uzbekistan has issued an official statement providing detailed information about the disease and the current epidemiological situation.

What is Metapneumovirus?

Metapneumovirus was first discovered in 2001.

The main mode of transmission is airborne droplets, and the virus can also spread through contact with contaminated surfaces.

The highest number of cases is recorded during the autumn-winter period.

Symptoms and Course of the Disease

Metapneumovirus infection is most commonly associated with symptoms of typical acute respiratory illnesses, such as a runny nose, cough, and fever.

In rare cases, the disease may lead to complications, such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia. However, most patients recover without complications.

Epidemiological Situation

Cases of metapneumovirus infection are reported annually in all countries.

In Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Health has also noted a seasonal increase in the number of acute respiratory viral infections, influenza, and the identification of metapneumovirus.

According to the latest laboratory results in Uzbekistan:

  • 36.9% of cases tested positive for the flu virus;
  • 30.2% tested positive for rhinovirus;
  • 28.6% tested positive for respiratory syncytial virus;
  • 1.2% tested positive for metapneumovirus;
  • 3.1% tested positive for other viruses.

Recommendations for Citizens

In light of the seasonal rise in respiratory infections, the Sanitary and Epidemiological Committee recommends the following precautions:

  • Follow personal hygiene and prevention guidelines;
  • Avoid crowded places, especially with children;
  • Isolate family members showing signs of illness and adhere to medical advice.

The Information Service of the Sanitary and Epidemiological Committee urges citizens not to panic and to rely only on official sources of information.
