Samarkand hosts event on improving criminal-procedural legislation
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Samarkand city hosted a seminar titled “Improving criminal-procedural legislation – important stage of judicial-legal reform to strengthen protection of human rights and freedoms”, which was organized by Committee on legislation and judicial-legal issues in cooperation with Samarkand regional court on criminal cases.

MPs of Legislative Chamber, judges of Samarkand regional courts, prosecutors, officers of Interior Ministry, lawyers, justice workers and others participated at the event.

The seminar participants analyzed results of judicial-legal reforms in Uzbekistan and issues related to strengthening protection of human rights and freedoms.

It was noted that Uzbekistan formed judicial system, which included Constitutional Court, general and economic courts. The country also reforms lawyers institute to provide quality legal aid to population at any stage of criminal process or consideration of civil or economic disputes.

The seminar underlined that Uzbekistan widely uses fines instead of jail punishments. It was said that almost half of sentences in 2000 were jail punishments, while 68.2% sentences in the first half of 2012 were punishments, which are not related to jail punishment.

The participants also underlined importance of abolishment of capital punishment and transfer of arrest warrant issue right to courts.

The seminar participants exchanged opinion on law enforcement in the related area. The participants made proposals on fully execution of criminal-procedural legislation.
