It is said that the summit can bring positive influence upon its member states as well as other regions of the world.

Alexey Vlasov, general director of the Information and Analytical Center for Study of the Social and Political Processes in the post-Soviet space at Lomonosov Moscow State University, said in an article that the SCO summit marks a major step in solidifying the international status of the regional bloc comprising China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Leaders of SCO member states focused on various global issues and came up with several suggestions of strategic significance, said Vlasov. For instance, presidents of Kazakhstan and Russia have suggested the establishment of a unified, supra-national settlement unit within the SCO framework.

The declaration signed at the summit, said Vlasov, essentially emphasizes the indispensability of international cooperation under the guidance of the Shanghai Spirit, which enshrines mutual trust and benefits, equality, negotiation and respect for cultural diversity, as well as the unshakable principle of safeguarding peace on an equal and secure basis.

Vlasov believed the decisions made at the SCO summit may profoundly influence its further development.

Russian daily Rossiskaya Gazeta on Wednesday published an article entitled "the SCO therapy," in which President Dmitry Medvedev was quoted as saying that discussions of leaders attending the summit have shown very similar or common evaluations on the ongoing global financial crisis, as well as similar solutions adopted in combating the crisis.

The article believed that the summit can not only help SCO members to reach consensus and enhance solidarity, but also provide new thinking and ideas for guaranteeing these countries’ economic security.

The SCO members also discussed the possibility of a future supra-national settlement unit at the summit given that the issue of economic security has become increasingly important, said the article.

After careful study on a wide range of international issues, all members have agreed to enhance solidarity in safeguarding regional security, it said.

The summit passed a declaration urging a fair global international financial order as well, added the article.

Meanwhile, an article in Russia’s Gazeta newspaper has noted the positive contribution of China for this summit.

The article said China’s provision of a US$10 billion loan to SCO member states in shoring up their economies amid the global financial crisis, is one of the most important decisions made at the summit.

The SCO was founded in Shanghai in 2001. Mongolia, Iran, Pakistan and India have the regional group’s observer status.
