Rosatom secures over 140 international patents in 2024

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In 2024, Rosatom organizations filed more than 280 international patent applications across 30+ countries, resulting in the registration of over 140 patents—1.5 times more than the previous year. These patents provide legal protection for cutting-edge nuclear energy technologies, including Generation III+ reactor units (VVER-1200, VVER-TOI), fast reactors, floating nuclear thermal power plant equipment, and small nuclear power stations.

Among the most significant patented innovations is a passive heat removal system monitoring device developed by Atomenergoproekt, Rosatom's engineering division. This technology enables real-time assessment of system performance, enhancing operational safety.

Another key invention is a device for producing monophase actinide salt powders, crucial for synthesizing uranium and plutonium salts used in nuclear fuel production. Developed by scientists at the V.G. Khlopin Radium Institute, Rosatom's scientific division, this technology allows for single-stage dry powder production, improving efficiency, reducing radioactive waste, and enhancing process safety.

Additionally, specialists from the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant (NCCP), part of Rosatom's fuel division, secured a patent for an innovative method of manufacturing fuel assemblies, optimizing nuclear fuel fabrication and boosting production efficiency.

Rosatom is actively expanding its global presence, with an international project portfolio that includes 39 power units under construction in 10 countries, such as China, Türkiye, Egypt, Bangladesh, and India. The company continues to strengthen technological partnerships while ensuring intellectual property protection through international patenting.

Over the past three years, Rosatom has significantly increased its patenting efforts, requiring internal resource reallocation to manage its growing technological portfolio. The corporation plans to file over 800 new applications and patents across more than 50 patent families in the near future.

A key focus remains engaging research organizations in patenting VVER reactor technologies and integrating intellectual property into Rosatom’s economic model, including incorporating patent value into EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contracts for international nuclear power plant projects.

“These efforts mark a major milestone in Rosatom’s global patent strategy. We are confident that our measures will not only increase the number of patents obtained but also strengthen the position of Russian scientists worldwide,” said Artyom Vernigora, Deputy Director for Operations at Science and Innovations, a private institution responsible for Rosatom’s patenting and intellectual property management.

Rosatom relaunched its international patenting program in 2022 under Science and Innovations, implementing specialized registries, a systematic data storage system, automated calculations, and optimized business processes. The initiative is led by Kuzma Snegov, head of the project office for international patenting.

Science and Innovations plays a key role in nuclear industry research and analytics, serving as the operator of the Unified Industry-Specific Thematic Plan (EOTP), which oversees numerous research and development projects annually. The institution also supports legal protection of intellectual property, participates in scientific programs, fosters talent development, and oversees Rosatom’s involvement in Russia’s Decade of Science and Technology.

Russia continues to strengthen international scientific cooperation, advancing major global projects, with Rosatom and its divisions playing a pivotal role in fostering global scientific and technological collaboration.
