Rosatom may use of dry cooling tower technology for nuclear power plants in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Russian Rosatom is considering the possibility of introducing “dry cooling tower” technology in the construction project of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Uzbekistan, Interfax reported this with reference to Polina Lyon, director of the department of sustainable development of the state corporation Rosatom.

She noted that in Uzbekistan, in fact, the situation with water is very difficult, because they have forecasts according to which there will be no water in the country by 2050. Dry-cooler technology could provide a solution for minimizing water consumption in nuclear power, she added.

The “dry cooling tower” technology assumes that there is no evaporation of water during the cooling process of the reactor.

Rosatom plans to build a complex of two power units with VVER-1200 reactor units in Uzbekistan, and the contract for the construction of the nuclear power plant is in its final stage.
