Uzbekistan 05/08/2009 Results of Avian Flu Communication Campaign

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A presentation of the results of the communication campaign on avian flu took place in Dedeman hotel. The communication campaign was the main components of the Avian Influenza Control and Human Pandemic Preparedness and Response Activities Project launched in 2007 in Uzbekistan.

It happened at the time of the peak spread of the Avian Influenza (AI) in the world. European Union provided financial support (US$2.96 million) through the Avian and Human Influenza Facility Trust Fundand the Project was administered by the World Bank.

The Project’s goals were to strengthen the country’s capacity to prevent the spread of avian influenza among poultry, prevent the transmission of avian influenza from birds to humans, and prepare for a potential pandemic of avian influenza transmissible between humans.

The Project is now coming to end and the objective of the round table was to assess how successful was the Project and Public Awareness and Information Component in particular. The activities under the Component aimed at minimizing the risk of infection outbreak and its spread, by ensuring that citizens understand the threat, and are aware of symptoms, with a view to influencing their behaviors in order to protect themselves and their communities

All counterparts were presenting the results of their work within the Project at the roundtable: Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, National Association of Electronic Media (NAESMI), Rural Restructuring Agency (Implementing Agency).

UNICEF as a lead for the Communication Component presented the results of the final assessment of the Communication Strategy on AI prevention. Ministry of Emergency Situations, National Aviation Company and other interested organisations and companies took part in the event.
