Putin and Trump held over two-hour phone conversation

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 19 May 2025, the presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, held telephone talks that lasted more than two hours. This conversation was one of the longest in recent times and drew international attention as a potential step toward de-escalating the conflict in Ukraine.

According to Western media outlets, including Reuters and BBC, both sides discussed options for an immediate ceasefire and the start of peace negotiations mediated by third parties, notably the Vatican. Donald Trump described the discussion as constructive in his statement and emphasized the United States’ readiness to support efforts to achieve peace. However, Western analysts note that key disagreements remain—particularly Moscow’s stance on security issues and territorial status.

Vladimir Putin, according to Russian sources, stressed the necessity of addressing the “root causes” of the conflict, emphasizing the importance of protecting Russia’s national interests and sovereignty. At the same time, he indicated that Russia is willing to consider a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, but only under conditions that ensure the country’s security.

Western experts highlight that despite openness to dialogue, Moscow maintains a firm position, and any agreements will require lengthy and complex negotiations. U.S. officials confirmed that further consultations between the parties will continue, though the timing and format of future meetings have not yet been agreed upon.

Overall, experts view the conversation as a positive sign indicating the two leaders’ willingness to seek compromises. At the same time, many issues remain unresolved, requiring attention to secure lasting peace in Eastern Europe.

The negotiations between Putin and Trump are ongoing amid mounting international pressure and calls for a swift end to hostilities, making the current dialogue a significant event in global politics.
