President receives report on major road infrastructure projects in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was presented with a report on the progress of major road infrastructure projects in Uzbekistan.

The country’s road network spans over 184,000 kilometers, with 25% of international highways experiencing heavy traffic. For example, the Tashkent – Samarkand highway, originally designed for 32,000 vehicles per day, currently serves 45,000 vehicles, leading to travel times of up to six hours. By 2030, traffic volume on this route is expected to exceed 80,000 vehicles per day.

A presidential resolution issued on 10 October 2023, outlined priority areas for the construction of modern highways, aimed at improving transportation conditions and strengthening the country’s logistics system.

Uzbekistan is currently implementing two major road projects: the construction of alternative highways connecting Tashkent with Andijan and Samarkand.

Tashkent – Andijan Expressway

This 314-kilometer highway is being developed with support from the World Bank, and an international tender was announced in January 2024, attracting over 30 leading foreign companies. The new road will reduce travel time between Tashkent and Andijan from five to three hours. Additionally, the project is expected to increase GDP by 2.6% and reduce road accidents by 40%.

Tashkent – Samarkand Highway

For this 300-kilometer route, a feasibility study has been completed with the involvement of foreign experts. Once operational, the road will cut travel time between Tashkent and Samarkand from five to three hours, significantly easing congestion on the existing highway.

Both highways will meet modern standards of comfort and safety, featuring paid service areas for drivers and passengers. Uzbek companies will play a key role in construction.

The Minister of Transport briefed the president on ongoing work, including geodetic surveys, land preparation, investment attraction, and contractor selection. Measures to accelerate project implementation were also discussed.
