President Orders Creation of Sustainable Olympic Sports Development System
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 1 July 2025, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a draft resolution concerning preparations for the XXXIV Summer Olympic Games and the XVIII Paralympic Games to be held in Los Angeles, USA, in 2028.
The President emphasized that Uzbekistan’s strong performance at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris — where the national team ranked 13th in the overall medal count — was the result of consistent government support for sports. During a video conference held on February 13 this year, the President set the task of establishing a sustainable system for preparing athletes for future international competitions, including the 2028 Games.
The drafted resolution outlines ten key objectives: prioritizing certain sports, expanding the range of disciplines in which Uzbekistan can achieve results, implementing transparent talent selection processes, creating a national training system based on international best practices, organizing targeted training camps for national teams, strengthening sports infrastructure, and expanding international cooperation in the field of sports.
A comprehensive program and performance targets for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics are being developed in parallel. A number of institutional and personnel measures are also planned. Fourteen regional branches have been established within the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan. Regional governors will serve as the President’s special representatives for the development of the Olympic movement, and officials from the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic Committee will be assigned to each region.
The training program is designed for the long term. A new competition, "Olympic Peaks of New Uzbekistan," will be launched to identify and train promising athletes at grassroots, regional, and national levels. The final stage of the competition will be held annually in the Olympic Village under the name “Presidential Olympics.” Winners and runners-up will be sent to Olympic training centers.
The Republican Olympic and Paralympic Center will play a key role in preparing national team reserves. Starting in 2026, the center will be funded from the state budget and will operate as a specialized educational institution — a school and college — with increased enrollment quotas. Students in their first and second years will receive scholarships from the Ministry of Sports. The center will also have free access to the facilities of the Olympic Village for training purposes.
To expand the pool of athletes, the role of private sports clubs will be enhanced. These clubs will be allowed to participate in official competitions, and their most promising athletes may be selected for national teams.
The project also includes a system of financial and moral incentives. Winners and medalists of international competitions will be granted admission to military universities without entrance exams. Coaches who train successful athletes will receive additional financial rewards.
President Mirziyoyev instructed the relevant bodies to ensure the effective operation of sports federations, develop regional infrastructure, increase support for athletes and coaches, and establish a robust system for training specialists in physical education and sports.
