Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 28 August, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with the winners and medalists of the XXXIII Summer Olympic Games.
The event was also attended by leaders of the National Olympic Committee, sports federations, coaches, athletes' parents, and representatives of government and public organizations.
The 2024 Olympic Games, held in Paris from 26 July to 11 August , were a significant event for Uzbekistan. The country was represented by 90 athletes in 19 sports and achieved impressive results, winning 8 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals. In the overall team standings, Uzbekistan ranked 13th, and 4th on the Asian continent. Among Turkic, Islamic countries, and CIS states, Uzbekistan secured first place.
The President congratulated the athletes on their achievements and emphasized that these successes are a vivid testament to the country's high potential for development. He also noted that the victories at the Olympic Games have strengthened national pride and inspired the people.
During the meeting, successes in specific sports were discussed. Diyor Keldiyorova became the first Uzbek woman to win a gold medal at the Summer Olympics. Svetlana Osipova won the country's first-ever silver medal in taekwondo. Ulugbek Rashitov became the youngest double Olympic champion in taekwondo.
Uzbekistan also showed its best results in judo at the Olympics, and the boxing team won 7 gold medals among men, securing first place in the team standings.
The President highlighted the importance of preparing for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and pointed to the need for improving the activities of sports federations such as water sports, athletics, cycling, shooting, and gymnastics. Opportunities in team sports and the necessity of attracting qualified foreign specialists in various areas of sports training were also discussed.
To maintain a high level of sports in the country, there are plans to create specialized schools and talent identification programs, as well as develop comprehensive programs for preparing athletes for international competitions. The President also instructed the government to develop proposals for the development of mass sports to make it an integral part of the national Olympic movement.
At the event, athletes and coaches were honored with awards and titles for their achievements at the Olympic Games.
