President of Uzbekistan meets with EU leaders at Samarkand Summit

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 3 April, within the framework of the Samarkand Summit, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, held negotiations with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who arrived in Uzbekistan for the visit.

The parties discussed in detail the prospects of deepening multifaceted cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union, with special emphasis on trade, economic, and investment aspects.

The high dynamics of bilateral contacts and the effectiveness of institutional mechanisms for cooperation were noted. Preparations are underway for the signing of the Agreement on Expanded Partnership and Cooperation.

Uzbekistan's trade turnover with EU countries shows steady growth, and the volume of investment projects with European companies exceeds 30 billion euros. Uzbekistan is one of the largest beneficiaries of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the European Investment Bank has opened a regional office in Tashkent.

EU leadership expressed support for Uzbekistan's economic reforms and its efforts to strengthen good-neighborly relations and cooperation in Central Asia.

The negotiations focused on expanding partnerships in innovation, green energy, mining, agriculture, transport, logistics, and digitalization. Prospects for cooperation in tourism, culture, science, education, and healthcare were also discussed.

The parties exchanged views on the upcoming "Central Asia – European Union" summit and strengthening ties between regions under the European strategy "Global Gateway." Special attention was given to supporting the socio-economic development of Afghanistan.
