Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has extended congratulations to Masoud Pezeshkian on his election as President of Iran.
In his message, the President of Uzbekistan expressed confidence that the multi-faceted and long-term partnership between the two countries will reach new heights in all priority areas.
"We aspire to further progressive and productive expansion of cooperation in political, trade-economic, transport-communication, and cultural-humanitarian spheres with your country, which has significant potential and opportunities, demonstrating dynamic development in recent years," emphasized Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
During the elections, reformist and moderate politician Masoud Pezeshkian secured approximately 16.4 million votes. His opponent and advocate of the conservative line, Said Jalili, received 13.5 million votes. The voter turnout was 49.8%.
The 69-year-old Pezeshkian, an ethnic Azerbaijani, has been a member of the Majlis since 2008, holding various positions including Vice-Speaker. A cardiothoracic surgeon by profession, prior to his political career, he served as the head of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences for five years. Pezeshkian entered politics in the early 2000s, serving as Minister of Health from 2001 to 2005.
