Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 6 June 2024, in Beijing, the governments of China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the implementation of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project.

This important event was the result of long negotiations and the start of construction of a new transport artery that will connect not only the three countries, but will also become a key factor in the development of the entire Central Asian region.

The purpose of the document is to begin the practical implementation of the project and determine measures to support each country in the process of constructing an international railway transport corridor.

The railway will pass through difficult mountainous terrain along the route “Kashgar – Torugart – Makmal – Jalal-Abad – Andijan.” The length of the line will be 486 km.

At the meeting at the government level, the creation of a Joint Project Company on the territory of Kyrgyzstan was discussed in accordance with local legislation. This will optimize interaction between the participating countries. China’s share in the company will be 51%, Kyrgyzstan - 24.5% and Uzbekistan - 24.5%.

It is expected that by 2023 the volume of transportation on the new railway will be 8 million tons per year, and by 2024 - 10 million tons per year and by 2050 - 13.5 million tons per year.

The signing of an intergovernmental agreement is an important step towards creating a unified transport space in Central Asia. The implementation of this ambitious project will be a driving force for economic growth, create new development opportunities and become a symbol of regional integration.
