Uzbekistan 17/07/2007 UWED Legal Clinic delegation attends international conference in South African Republic

On 7-14 July 2007, a delegation of Legal Clinic under the University of World Economy and Diplomacy visited South African Republic to participate in the Fifth International Journal of Legal Clinical Education conference, share experience with legal clinics and learn new forms of legal aid to the population.

The conference was held in Johannesburg and the Uzbek delegation acquainted with information on creation, functioning, further development and international coordination of legal clinic’s activity.

During the visit delegation learned about state-legal system and experience of pro bono aid in South African Republic and in International Journal of clinical education member states.

The Uzbek delegation shared their experience with their colleagues on such issues as administration, organization and formation of trainings, pro bono aid and learned international experience of legal clinic’s activity.

Within the framework of visit, the delegation met Chief justice of Constructional court of South African Republic, representatives of Mpumalanga province parliament, Legal Aid Board of Nelspruit and company on insurance of legal aid, as well as Legal clinic of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

The participants of the meetings underlined important role of legal clinics in preparation of skilled lawyers and rising awareness of vulnerable layers of population. It is expected that the Uzbek delegation will adopt learned experience in development of legal clinics and other forms of pro bono aid in Uzbekistan.

The visit was organized by support of UNDP in Uzbekistan within the project "Legal Aid and Legal Literacy for Better Access to Justice", which aims at improvement of access to justice for people, who cannot afford or have limited access to legal services, such as women, children, the poor, the elderly and people with disabilities and to increase quality of legal services through training of law students.
