Uzbekistan concerned about situation on Tajik border - news agency
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delay in solving the problem of Uzbek-Tajik border delimitation and demarcation gives rise to conflicts. The row that broke out in Beshariq District in the eastern Uzbek region of Ferghana is evidence of this, a source at Uzbek law-enforcement agencies has told a Regnum Novosti news agency correspondent.

The source said that there were areas in Beshariq District of Ferghana Region which were used by Tajik citizens living near the border. Particularly, there are 58 ha of areas in the Adirobod farm, 38 ha in the Qoqon forestry and 50 ha in the south of the enclave of Vorukh.

The source also said that the conflict broke out after the Uzbek side had suggested Tajik citizens take out their harvest in an organized way, in accordance with the established legal procedure, through the Ravot border customs post.

The Tajik side did not welcome Uzbekistan’s decision as Tajiks did not want to travel extra kilometres to go through the customs post.

"Cases of provocations have become frequent on the border. Sometimes women try to make a scene, and sometimes people make speeches and call on Tajik border guards `to solve the border crossing problem quickly and without any concession and to leave everything as before’. Open attempts to aggravate the situation and to create hysteria among Tajik people clearly show that the scenario is well-planned. Natural and clear evidence of this is features that appeared immediately on a number of media outlets, the content of which is obviously aimed at stirring up anger among the population. In the eternal friendship agreement signed between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan on 15 June 2000, the Tajik side, in particular, guarantees the implementation of measures to avoid violations of the Tajik-Uzbek border regime. Correspondingly, the Uzbek side also assumes similar responsibility. In essence, the agreement is being observed even in the current situation. After all, it is a question of preventing the uncontrolled crossing of the state border and regulating the process of citizens’ crossing through border checkpoints," the source concluded.
