The 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China opens in Beijing
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The 20th congress of the ruling Communist Party of China opened on Sunday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, delegates representing all regions of the PRC will determine the country’s further development course and elect the top party leadership.
The Congress is a key event in the political calendar of the PRC. The first congress of the CPC took place in the year of its foundation - in 1921, and then the party consisted of only a few separate "circles" with a total number of just over 50 people. Today, the Chinese Communist Party has grown into a giant with 96.7 million members, ruling over everything in a country of almost 1.5 billion people. Previously, congresses were convened with different breaks, and since 1977 the practice has been fixed to hold them every five years.
China will rapidly form a new development architecture and focus on promoting high-quality development, Xi Jinping said on Sunday.
High-quality development is paramount for the all-round construction of a modernized socialist state, Xi Jinping said in a speech at the opening of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China.
"We must fully, clearly and comprehensively implement the new concept of development, firmly adhere to the reformist course of a socialist market economy, and continue to expand openness to the outside world at a high level," Xi Jinping said.
According to him, the process of creating a new development architectonics should be accelerated, considering the internal circulation of the national economy as the basis and assuming mutual stimulation of double circulation - domestic and international.
About 2,296 delegates from all over the country came to the capital to participate in the congress, which could be members of the CPC with high ideological and political qualities, a good work style, competent in discussing state affairs and having achieved outstanding success.
The congress will end on 22 October, during which time the delegates will consider the report of the 19th CPC Central Committee, which will be read by CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping on Sunday, study the report on the work of the 19th CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, consider and approve amendments to the CPC charter and also elect the Central Committee and the Central Commission for the Inspection of Discipline of the 20th convocation.
After the closing of the congress, the first plenum of the Central Committee of the 20th convocation will take place. According to established tradition, it should take place the next day. The Plenum will appoint a new composition of the Politburo of the Central Committee and the Standing Committee of the Politburo - in fact, the party and political elite, which will govern the country for the next five years. Chinese leader Xi Jinping is expected to be nominated for a third term as CPC general secretary and chairman of the Central Military Council.
