Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President Shavkat Mirziyoyev sent condolences to President of Indonesia Joko Widodo in connection with the numerous casualties as a result of riots at the Kanjurakhan football stadium in the city of Malang, press secretary of the President Sherzod Asadov said.
The match between the teams is considered a local derby, so a lot of attention was riveted to it from the fans who filled the stadium. After the final whistle, the behavior of the Arema fans escalated into riots, and the security service took the players off the field. Then the fans broke out onto the lawn and there was a skirmish between them and the police. Enraged fans began to throw various objects at the security forces, to which they used batons and tear gas grenades in response.
After the incident, the Indonesian Human Rights Commission called for checking the work of the security services on the ground. Thus, it became known that the stadium, which can accommodate no more than 38 thousand people, was attended by about 42 thousand visitors on Saturday.
Indonesian Sports Minister Zainudin Amalie said the agency will review the requirements for organizing football matches. In addition, the games of the Indonesian top league BRI Liga 1 will be suspended while the circumstances of the incident are being investigated.
The head of our state expressed words of sympathy and support to the families and friends of the victims, wished a speedy recovery to the victims.
