Uzbekistan 19/10/2009 Central Asian officials hold consultations on nuclear free zone

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- First consultative meeting of the member states of the Agreement on Nuclear Free Zone in Central Asia was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on 15 October.

Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry presented current state and perspectives of cooperation of the Central Asian states within the existing nuclear free zone.

The sides considered issues on implementation of obligations within the agreement, interaction of the states, possessing nuclear weapon, as well as election of coordinator, who will represent member states at the international states.

The sides also agreed to hold next consultative meeting in Uzbekistan.

Agreement on Nuclear Free Zone in Central Asia entered into force on 21 March 2009. The agreement was signed on 8 September 2006 in Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan. The agreement became significant contribution of Central Asia to strengthening of regional and global peace and security.
