Afghanistan plans to buy electricity from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan

19/04/2007 16:31

Afghanistan is planning to purchase electricity from neighbouring Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and the country started to construct electricity network in direction to these countries, Itar-Tass reported quoting Afghan official.

Finance Ministry of Afghanistan Anwar ul Haq Ahadi said in Washington that there are no deals yet among countries.

Afghani official said Afghanistan had to purchase electricity abroad as it has no opportunities to satisfy demand internally.

Anwar ul Haq Ahadi said that Afghanistan and Uzbekistan discussed opportunity to supply about 300 megawatt of electricity a year, but Uzbekistan expressed readiness to supply only half of this volume.

Negotiations with Tajikistan are complicated due to seasonal limitations to electricity supplies, Afghan minister said.

He added that deficit of electricity is one of the main problems in socio-economic development of Afghanistan.

Ahadi said that Afghanistan will not be able to realize tasks in energy sector of Millennium Development Goals of UN without assistance of international community.
