Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 14 April, the 7th meeting of the Uzbek-Polish Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation (IGC) was held in conference mode, Dunyo news agency reported.
The meeting was held under the co-chairmanship of the Deputy Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan Badriddin Abidov and the Deputy Minister of Development, Labor and Technology of Poland, Robert Tomanek.
The event was attended by representatives of ministries, departments and organizations of the parties. They stated that for several years there has been a dynamic growth in bilateral trade, which in 2020, despite the quarantine situation, for the first time exceeded US$250 million. Commodity exchange in the first three months of 2021 is also showing growth.
During the meeting of the IGC, issues of trade, economic, interregional cooperation were discussed. Attention was paid to issues of interaction in the field of industry, transport, construction, agriculture, environmental protection, IT technologies, access to the Polish labor market and others.
Particular emphasis was placed on investment and innovation cooperation in the field of energy efficiency and energy conservation, the creation of new technologies in the production of building materials, agro-industrial, banking and financial, transport and logistics, and tourism.
The possibilities of assisting the agro-industrial complex of Uzbekistan in the modernization and development of agriculture, the development and implementation of a strategy for diversifying the agricultural sector, and the development of intensive horticulture were considered.
The parties discussed an increase in the export supplies of fruits and vegetables and textile products to Poland within the framework of the "GSP +" regime provided. The Polish side asked to consider the issue of opening a wholesale trade center for products from Uzbekistan in the wholesale complex "GD international", the daily turnover of which is about US$70 million.
The head of the Polish delegation emphasized the role and importance of large-scale reforms in the economy and social sphere, carried out in recent years in Uzbekistan under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. According to him, both in Poland and in the European Union, they positively assess the foreign policy of the republic’s leadership, which, in particular, demonstrates openness and disposition to expand cooperation with European countries.
He assured that Poland will assist Uzbekistan in the framework of the Competitiveness Program of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), as well as in the framework of Poland’s chairmanship in the International Banking Union.
It was proposed to create a special format of cooperation on trade, economic and investment issues. Responsible institutions for resolving these issues on the Polish side will be the Ministry of Development, Labor and Technology and the Investment and Trade Agency, and on the Uzbek side - the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade.
They expressed their readiness to begin localizing the production of agricultural machinery by the companies "Pronar" and "UNIA", in which Uzbekistan is interested. At the same time, it is planned to make maximum use of the raw material, human and export potential of the republic.
The Polish side expressed interest in cooperation in the agricultural sector and readiness to hold the first meeting of the interdepartmental group on agriculture in May-June this year in Tashkent.
A significant increase in the activity of international freight traffic was noted. The number of permits has tripled compared to 2017; in 2020, cargo turnover between countries increased by 40% compared to 2019. They expressed their readiness to organize training and internships for railway specialists in large logistics centers in Poland.
In the banking and financial sphere, the Polish side confirmed its readiness to finance projects in Uzbekistan both through direct allocation of funds to investors from both sides, and through the opening of loans to Uzbek banks at low interest rates. The Ministry of Finance, Polish banks, the Credit Information Bureau and the Clearing House are open for partnership with financial institutions of Uzbekistan and preparation of specific proposals in this direction.
Special attention was paid to supporting start-ups in Uzbekistan, expanding cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Innovative Development to exchange experience in this area and introduce business acceleration programs.
The parties agreed to establish cooperation between the Polish Geological Institute and the State Committee for Geology of Uzbekistan to conduct joint geological research of hydrocarbons in the republic, improve the qualifications of Uzbek geologists and prepare proposals for European investors.
During the discussion of the prospects for cooperation with Poland on external labor migration, the parties agreed to continue consultations between the relevant departments of the two countries. The Polish side welcomed the intention to open a representative office of the Agency for External Labor Migration in Poland.
Issues of cooperation in the field of tourism, opening up additional opportunities for increasing tourist flows to both countries were discussed. Polish travel companies and business circles are considering opportunities not only to increase mutual tourist flow, but also to implement joint projects to develop tourism infrastructure in Uzbekistan.
