First specialized department for the rehabilitation of children with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities opens in Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In order to fulfill paragraph 12 of the Action Plan for the implementation of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On measures to further improve medical and social assistance to children with rare (orphan) and other hereditary and genetic diseases "and the Order of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On measures to further improve medical and social assistance to children with cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorder" in the Republican Children’s Psychoneurological Hospital named after U.K. Kurbanov in cooperation with the Republican non-governmental non-profit organization "Avlod Baraka", a 30-bed department for the rehabilitation of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities was organized.
The purpose of the event is to inform all interested departments, specialists, doctors, teachers, parents and society in general, about the organization of the first specialized department in the public health system of the Republic of Uzbekistan for the rehabilitation of children with ASD and other developmental disabilities, designed for 30 beds.
During the event, familiarization with the programs, methods of treatment, rehabilitation and correctional work of the Department was carried out.
There was a presentation developed by the Avlod Baraka Program "Comprehensive system of assistance and continuous interdepartmental support of children, adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other mental disorders" - from early detection, diagnosis, correction and support in the education system, to employment, accompanied residence and ensuring the availability of all objects of social life, culture, sports, transport, etc.
16 specialists of the hospital were trained in ABA therapy and correctional pedagogy, organized by the Republican non-governmental non-profit organization "Avlod Baraka". Seminars and trainings were conducted by experts from the University of California (USA, San Francisco) and the Our Solar World Center (Russia, Moscow) according to programs specially developed for Uzbekistan.
Diagnosis is carried out using the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT-R ™, Early Screening of Autistic Traits Questionnaire, Childhood Autism Rating Scale , CARS).
A unique comprehensive program of rehabilitation and social adaptation is developed for each child.
To implement the rehabilitation program, the department has deployed a psychologist’s office, a sensory room, a sensorimotor development room, a LEGO room, a speech therapist’s office, a social adaptation room, a sand therapy corner, art therapy, an emotion room, rooms for role-playing games (supermarket, hairdresser, cafe, and others), music and dance hall.
The hospitalization of the child is carried out with the accompaniment of the mother or her substitute. The department also operates a school for mothers to teach parents the skills of dealing with a special child and to conduct supportive classes at home. If desired and on the recommendation of specialists, you can visit the department, and after receiving the entire range of planned activities, go home with the child. In order to prevent the formation of a negative attitude towards therapy in a child with ASD, in accordance with the recommendations of leading foreign experts in this field, it is advisable to visit the department 2-3 times a week.
The course of treatment is 14-30 days, depending on the severity of the disease and the child’s adaptation to inpatient conditions.
In cases of the child’s categorical refusal to visit the hospital, an on-site service will be provided (within the city of Tashkent): a specialist’s visit to the house on a paid basis.
In the future, it is planned to organize branches in the regions, transform the department into a Center, provide social support for a special child in society and develop special software for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of rehabilitation.
