Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva is on a working visit to Geneva. Within its framework, meetings were organized with the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Daren Tang, heads of the Permanent Missions of Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lebanon at the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland.
During the meeting, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, congratulating on the election of our country to the UN Human Rights Council, noted that this is a vivid confirmation and recognition of the international community of the large-scale reforms undertaken under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to protect human rights, as well as evidence of strong adherence of Uzbekistan to the goals and principles of the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Moreover, becoming a member of this authoritative body, in the next three years Uzbekistan will make a worthy contribution to the protection of human rights in the international format, Ghebreyesus stressed.
The WHO Director General also expressed gratitude to the leadership of our country for supporting and following the methodological recommendations of the World Health Organization during the spread of coronavirus infection. Moreover, he fully supported the policy pursued under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to mitigate the consequences of the pandemic in the country. Including, the creation of the Anti-Crisis Fund, the funds of which are primarily designed to provide medical institutions with medicines, means of protection and diagnostics, as well as monthly allowances for medical workers. Ghebreyesus highly appreciated the measures taken in the Republic of Uzbekistan and the primary attention paid to the issues of not only preventing the spread of COVID-19, but also protecting public health. A positive assessment was also given to the work carried out over the past three years to protect the family, motherhood and childhood, improve the medical culture of the population, which have been elevated to the rank of state policy, the results of which are evident today.
In this regard, the WHO Director General announced his readiness to study the issue of including the Republic of Uzbekistan in the Program for the Protection of Maternal and Child Health, implemented jointly with the Buffett Foundation (USA) for the implementation of technical assistance projects.
At the end of the meeting, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus asked to convey words of deep respect and best wishes to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Uzbekistan has made progress in ensuring human rights and freedoms. WIPO Director General Daren Tang noted this, congratulating our country on its election to the UN Human Rights Council during the meeting. It was noted that WIPO is closely following the changes taking place in Uzbekistan on the protection of intellectual property rights.
“The fact that the head of state gives priority to these issues indicates the importance of intellectual property for the republic,” said Daren Tang. - Having studied the information about the meeting on measures to improve the system of protection of intellectual property under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, held on 12 October, I agree with the need to further improve national legislation, strengthen the protection of intellectual property, and introduce scientific achievements in each department and industry. From our side, we are ready to provide all possible assistance to Uzbekistan in this matter, including the development of a three-year Strategy for the Development of Intellectual Property in your country.
It was noted that cooperation with Uzbek experts will continue to improve the rating positions of Uzbekistan next year. The WIPO Director General also expressed gratitude to Uzbekistan for providing data for inclusion in the "Global Innovation Index - 2020".
During the meeting, Daren Tang dwelled on issues of creating national brands and protecting geographic names at the international level.
“Agricultural products, folk art and handicrafts of Uzbekistan are widely known throughout the world,” said the WIPO Director General. - We are ready to assist in their protection at the international level, as well as in the exchange of experience in the protection of intellectual property in Singapore for their application in Uzbekistan.
At the meetings with the ambassadors of Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lebanon, a number of important issues were discussed, the achievements of Uzbekistan were noted.
The head of the diplomatic mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina Nermina Kapetanovic stressed that in recent years Uzbekistan has made serious progress in ensuring human rights and the development of parliamentarism in the country.
- Having 10 years of experience in the country’s parliament, I watched the positive changes taking place in your country. I can say with confidence that the new Uzbekistan is moving in the right direction, - noted Nermina Kapetanovic.
At the meeting, Ambassador of Argentina Federico Villegas also stressed that in a short period Uzbekistan has achieved tremendous results in ensuring human rights and freedoms, including improving parliamentary activity.
During her stay in Geneva, the head of the upper chamber of the parliament of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva also took part in the Third Review Conference of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on gender equality with a detailed thematic speech.
