Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - On 29 September 2020, the 7th meeting of the Uzbek-Tajik Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation.
The meeting was also attended by the heads of the relevant ministries, departments, industry associations, joint stock companies and business associations of the two countries.
During the event, the parties thoroughly discussed the current state and further expansion of bilateral cooperation in investment, trade, financial and banking, scientific and educational, tourism, cultural and humanitarian spheres.
An open dialogue at the level of heads of government made it possible to clearly identify areas of mutual interest for further in-depth interaction, outline specific steps to accelerate the advancement of joint projects and agree on a format for further interdepartmental interaction.
During the meeting, a significant untapped potential in the field of investment cooperation was noted. The parties agreed to jointly work out new projects of industrial cooperation in light, food, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, pharmaceuticals and the production of building materials.
It was also emphasized that despite the growth in trade between the two countries observed in recent years, there are ample opportunities for a multiple increase in the volume of mutual trade on a balanced and mutually beneficial basis by expanding the range and volumes of supplies of products of Uzbek and Tajik production.
In this regard, further actions were agreed to ensure the growth of mutual trade, including the conduct of expert consultations on the development of measures aimed at simplifying trade procedures, mutual elimination of existing barriers and diversification of the structure of trade, working out the issue of placing trading houses in the territories of the two countries.
During the discussion of the prospects for further building up cooperation in the transport and logistics sphere, the parties agreed on the need to optimize customs and border control procedures, as well as to implement joint projects for the construction, modernization and equipping of railway infrastructure facilities.
Also, within the framework of the meeting, a wide range of issues of establishing systemic cooperation in the field of education, science, health care, tourism, cultural exchange, sports, migration and employment of the population was considered.
After the meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, the Uzbek-Tajik business forum was held, following which 308 investment and trade agreements were signed for US$724 million.
