German defense chief to visit Uzbekistan, Afghanistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Germany’s defense minister will visit Uzbekistan Monday before heading to Afghanistan where Berlin has one of the largest contingents in NATO-led operations, the ministry said on Sunday. Franz Josef Jung will begin his tour in the Uzbek town of Termez, right on the Afghan border, which is the air base for German forces going into northern Afghanistan. He will also meet with Uzbekistan’s defense chief, Kaboul Berdiev. Jung will spend Tuesday and Wednesday in the north, where he will visit a training center for Afghan police and also meet local teams involved in reconstruction. Germany currently has 3,560 soldiers in Afghanistan as part of NATO’s 55,000- strong International Security Assistance Force. Berlin is expected to send some 600 additional troops to help boost security in the Afghanistan during elections set for August.
