Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are actively cooperating to develop and strengthen transport infrastructure through designing and using new economically profitable routes, Jahon news agency under the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.

“Thanks to profitable geographical location, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan possess all opportunities to develop international trade between Asia and Europe, north and south, the Foreign Ministry reported before Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov’s official visit to Uzbekistan.

Both countries’ car and railway networks form economical competitive transnational transport corridors which connect the Central Asian countries with the world’s all major markets.

“The Navoi-Turkmenbashi-Baku-Kars transport route is the most perspective amongst transport routes. This route enables to provide access to markets of Europe, North Africa and Middle East. At present Uzbekistan enters Iran through the Turkmen Serakhs city and delivers some part of its exports to world markets,” the agency reported.

In 2008, goods turnover between the countries increased by 50 percent to US$132.3 million, the Uzbek Foreign Ministry reported. Basically, the Uzbek export included mineral fertilizers, transport and communication services, agricultural equipments, building materials, tobacco products, fruit and nuts, ferrous metals and their products and transportation utilities.

Uzbekistan imports polymers of propylene, transport and communication services, mineral matters and inorganic chemistry products. "The sides have a considerable potential to promote gas-transport infrastructure,” the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said. “Being giant gas producers and exporters, our countries yield a common interest in constructing new gas pipelines providing safe gas supply to world markets.”

"Uzbekistan upholds and partakes in the Turkmenistan- China gas pipeline project. A special work schedule was adopted upon Uzbek President’s decree on up-to-date construction of gas pipeline zone through our country," the agency said.

Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammadov’s upcoming visit to Uzbekistan will advance the cooperation of the two countries, the report said.
