Uzbekistan 26/01/2009 Russia, Uzbekistan enjoy close stances on world issues: communique

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Russia and Uzbekistan state closeness or coincidence of stances on main issues of world policy as well as on the situation in the Central Asian region, said a joint communique of the Russian and Uzbek presidents signed on the results of a state visit to Uzbekistan by Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev.

The sides "note a need to further strengthen cooperation in fight against international terrorism, religious extremism, illegal drug trafficking and other challenges and threats to regional and international security," the communique said.

"The sides stated closeness or coincidence of stances on main issues of world politics, as well as on the situation in the Central Asian region," it stressed.

"The presidents expressed concern in connection with the persisting difficult situation in Afghanistan, the level of threats, including drug aggression, coming from the territory of that state," said the joint communique of the two presidents.

The sides "expressed confidence that in order to return Afghanistan back to peaceful life, it is necessary to have coordinated assistance from the international community in the strengthening of state power as well as law and order, in a post-conflict restoration of the Afghan economy, humanitarian assistance to the population of that country," the communique said.

The communique also focused on bilateral trade and economic cooperation. "The sides stated a positive pace in mutual trade, cooperation in the fuel-energy and telecommunications spheres, as well as noted mutual interest in the diversification of investment cooperation through the implementation of concrete projects in mechanic and aircraft engineering, exploration of space for peaceful purposes, the development of transport infrastructure, processing and chemical branches, pharmaceutics and other promising directions," the document emphasized.

The presidents discussed the state of the world economy in conditions of the global financial and economic crisis, as well as possible forms of bilateral and multilateral cooperation with an aim to minimize its aftermath.

"In line with norms of international law and national legislation the sides will take measures to curb any manifestations of nationalism and xenophobia, aimed at inciting ethnic hatred, or encouraging violence against citizens because of their ethnicity," it stressed.
