Uzbekistan 18/11/2008 Uzbek diplomats discuss multilateral negotiation and conference diplomacy

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A five-day training workshop “Effective Performance in Multilateral Conference Diplomacy and Negotiation” was held at the Avenue Park Hotel in the Charvak recreation zone.

This unique workshop was organized by the UNDP project “Enhancing the capacity of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to better respond to the emerging issues of the New millennium” in cooperation with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

Thirty mid-level and junior diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as specialists and experts from the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations, Investment and Trade, University of World Economy and Diplomacy, etc. attended the training, aimed to provide participants with an enhanced understanding of the dynamics unfolding in multilateral conference diplomacy and negotiation, particularly as practiced in the numerous meetings and conferences taking place in multilateral forums.

Ms. Kyoko Postil, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Uzbekistan welcomed the workshop participants during the opening ceremony and pointed out on the importance of the event. She stressed particular attention to the joint project with the MFA, as it ultimately aimed at assisting Uzbekistan in implementing its commitments towards the achievement of MDGs with respect to the “global partnership in development”, through enhancement of institutional and human resource capacities of the ministry. It has been underlined that this event would improve knowledge, understanding and professional skills of Uzbek diplomats involved into the negotiations in multilateral context.

This unique training workshop for the first time kindly provided in Uzbekistan by highly qualified experts from UNITAR, which is the only institution having the solid academic experience and providing quality trainings in the area of conference diplomacy and multilateral negotiations.

Over the next five days UNITAR trainers facilitated a series of intensive, interactive training sessions that enable participants to better understand the contextual complexity of multilateral conferences including working methods and procedures, to develop confidence and impart participants with skills and techniques to integrate more actively into the negotiation process and to function efficiently as conference delegates and negotiators. The training was of substantial practical significance. It was built on modern teaching techniques and methods including concept learning, role-playing, real-world exposure and experience-sharing. The trainers used a variety of tools in the form of simulation exercises, videos, and working groups, thus creating a highly dynamic and attractive learning environment.

The joint project of UNDP and the MFA “Enhancing the capacity of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to better respond to the emerging issues of the New millennium” aimed at strengthening the capacity of MFA to develop and effectively implement the foreign policy of the Government of Uzbekistan. The objective of the project is to be obtained by facilitating the main inputs including the establishment of adequate technological, human resource, institutional, and knowledge platforms.
