Charity weddings take place in Surkhandarya region
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A charity project “1,000 Weddings and 1,000 Sunnat-tuy” (circumcision) was held in Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan on 26-27 August 2012.

The project is initiated by the Chairperson of the Trustee Council of Fund Forum Gulnara Karimova and organized by Mehr Nuri Foundation, Women’s Council and Social Initiatives Support Fund.

Within the project, weddings of 70 pairs and sunnar-tuys of 72 boys took place in Surkhandarya region. In the result, number of weddings, organized within the projects, made up 812 and sunnat-tuys – 999.

The project is based on the folk tradition of hashar (volunteerism), where each person helps someone in need in some way. Guli brand, for example, along with young designers have created around 50 dresses, which are lend to the brides. Eighteen entrepreneurs joined the organizers of the project in Surkhandarya Region.

The event which took place in four districts in the region concluded with a grand holiday in the city of Termez. As many as 500 people came together to celebrate the event and extend congratulations to the newlyweds and the boys.

The crowd included their friends and relatives, public figures, journalists and Uzbek pop stars such as Zulaiho Baihanova, Abduhoshim Ismoilov and Hosila Rahimova. In addition, winners of Yangi avlod (New generation) Children’s Art Festival performed a medley of famous Uzbek songs and the author of the project, the chairperson of the Fund Forum’s Board of Trustess Gulnara Karimova, handed over presents to the newlyweds, who received clocks, Guli amulets and congratulatory postcards while the boys got sports attire.

The project sponsors gave washing machines and vacuum cleaners to the young couples and bicycles and stuffed toys to the kids.
