Uzbekistan, Singapore discuss ties, intl issues
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation headed by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore Masagos Zulkifli has been received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan on 3 April 2012.

The sides considered perspectives of multipronged Uzbek-Singaporean relations, interaction within the international organizations, first of within the United Nations. At the same time, it is important to note common position of the states on international and regional issues.

The sides also discussed issues of deepening investment, inter-banking cooperation and expanding mutual trade.

The officials expressed mutual interest to exchange delegations between cultural and art circles, and establish close cooperation in science and education.

On the same time, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of two states held the second round bilateral political consultations, which became continuation of the previous stage, which was held in December 2010 in Singapore.

It was stated that this mechanism of regular contacts allow the Ministries of Foreign Affairs to monitor implementation of agreements, reached during the visit of the President of Uzbekistan to Singapore in 2007 and exchange opinion on actual international and regional issues.

At the consideration of issues on boosting trade-economic issues, it was noted that trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Singapore made up US$101 million in 2011.

Existence of high-skilled specialists, huge reserves of natural resources, advanced technologies and investment-financial opportunities are evidence for untapped potential of bilateral cooperation in economic area.

During five business forums, business circles of two states established contacts in such sectors as textile, electrotechnical, pharmaceutical, automobile and chemistry industry. The sides are discussing issues on participation of Singaporean firms in long-term and important projects in key sectors of economy in Uzbekistan.

Two countries accumulated positive experience in such spheres as education and science through establishing direct contacts among educational establishments. The Uzbek specialists improve their skills in various areas within the Singaporean cooperation programme.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Singapore to Uzbekistan Zulfikli Baharuddin participated at the meeting.

After the talks, Uzbekistan and Singapore signed intergovernmental agreement on abolishment of visas for persons with diplomatic passports, memorandum of understanding between Academy of State and Public Constriction under President of Uzbekistan and College of Public Service of Singapore and memorandum of understanding between Ecologic Movement of Uzbekistan and Singapore Environment Council.
