French envoy pays visit to Termez
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Uzbekistan François Gauthier paid a visit to Termez (Surkhandarya region) on 7-8 October 2011 to familiarize with archeological digs, carried out by the Uzbek-French archeological mission of Bactria.

Accompanied by Advisor on cultural affairs, he was received by Termez city governor and visited archeological digs area, the French Embassy in Uzbekistan said.

Led by Professor Pierre Leriche (CNRS-ENS) and working in close cooperation with the Institute of Archeology under the Uzbekistan Science Academy and State Art Institute, the mission studies heritage, development and town-planning in the Surkhandarya valley from Alexander the Great till the end of Middle Age.

The study is directed at filling knowledge gaps about the richest province of the Alexander Empire, center of Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, cradle of Kushan Empire and one of main regions of Mawarannahr.

The embassy said that large number of archeological finds was found, including temples, fortifications, fortresses, ornaments, and ceramic products. They are believed the most beautiful in the Central Asian region.

Historic and scientific values of these objects represent huge touristic potential, which will attract tourists to Termez city. French archeological mission contributes to development of Uzbekistan. France finances five sites in Uzbekistan.
