Uzbekistan calls to expand nuclear free zones under UN aegis
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Nuclear free zones became one of ways of limiting nuclear weapons spread and preventing nuclear catastrophes, the Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the UN Murad Askarov at the High-Level Meeting on Nuclear Safety at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Uzbek envoy called to expand nuclear free zones under aegis of the UN. He recalled that the Uzbek President Islam Karimov voiced initiative on creating nuclear free zone in Central Asia at the 48th session of the UN General Assembly in September 1993 and the initiative was implemented with the efforts of interested countries and international organizations.

He said that this is one of the five nuclear free zones in the planet and the first zone in northern hemisphere. He added that the zone borders with two states, possessing nuclear weapons.

The UN News Center said that he underlined that development of national, regional and global control systems over movement of nuclear materials and technologies should be developed and expanded to ensure nuclear security.

Ambassador said that Uzbekistan created modern system of border control over movement of nuclear materials, which proved its efficiency as several attempts to smuggle nuclear products through Uzbekistan were prevented.
