Uzbekistan 07/07/2010 Latvian Foreign Minister Aivis Ronis: Uzbekistan is important partner to Latvia, EU and NATO

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 6-7 July, during his working visit, Foreign Minister Aivis Ronis met with the Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan, Vladimir Norov, and the Minister of Defence, Kabul Berdiev.

The Latvian and Uzbek officials discussed the bilateral political dialogue, economic co-operation, an expanded dialogue between the European Union and Central Asia, and the stability issues in the region, including disbalance in Kirgizstan and security situation in Afghanistan.

The foreign ministers of Latvia and Uzbekistan rated positively the political dialogue of both countries at all levels. The Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan noted the interest in his country about the knowledge and technology base in Latvia, education exchange programmes, and the co-operation potential of the tourism sector. When talking about the facilitation of business partnerships, Mr Norov confirmed the readiness of the Uzbek government to reinforce an attractive investment environment.

Aivis Ronis emphasised that Uzbekistan is an important partner in Central Asia: for Latvia on bilateral basis, as well as for the European Union and NATO. The Latvian Foreign Minister pledged the commitment that the Embassy of Latvia in Tashkent will in duly and responsibly represent the EU Presidency holder, Belgium, in Uzbekistan; he also invited Uzbekistan to expand co-operation with the European Union. "The Embassy of Latvia in Tashkent, during this half year, is a bridge for the co-operation between the European Union and Uzbekistan," the Foreign Minister emphasised. The Uzbek side expressed gratitude for Latvia's support within the EU framework and understanding on the issues of regional stability.

The Foreign Minister of Latvia in his discussions with the Uzbek officials stressed that both Latvia and Uzbekistan are key links to ensure the transit of non-military cargo for the needs of International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. "Both countries see future co-operation in politics and in projects, targeted at the stabilisation of Afghanistan and the renewal of its economies," Minister Ronis indicated. The Foreign Minister of Latvia and the Minister of Defence of Uzbekistan in their discussion made a conclusion that the involvement of Russia to ensure transit to Afghanistan is important both for NATO and Uzbekistan, and the region as a whole.

When talking about the security situation in view of the instability in Kyrgyzstan, the foreign minister of Latvia and Uzbekistan were of the same opinion that an international investigation should be held of all the events both concerning the change of power on 7 April, and the recent riots in Osh where violence was targeted at the Uzbek minority. Mr Ronis reiterated that Kyrgyzstan must honour all international commitments including the protection of investment. Both ministers concluded with regret that in Kyrgyzstan there still exists a possibility that the tension could increase.

In a conversation with the Minister of Defence, Kabul Berdiev, the Foreign Minister Aivis Ronis commended the actions by Uzbek authorities in achieving a speedy solution to the refugee crisis.
