The management of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan held a meeting with the delegation on 8 April 2010. The sides discussed opportunities of cooperation in energy, telecommunication, mobile communications, construction, investment climate in Uzbekistan and perspectives of economic interaction with Portugal, including in territory of Navoi free industrial and economic zone.
Joao Gomes Cravinho underlined that Portuguese companies and firms are ready to participate in implementation of joint investment projects.
The meeting is evidence for high interest to development of cooperation by the Portuguese business circles and official establishments, the Uzbek Chamber said.
According to the Uzbekistan Foreign Affairs Ministry, Portugal recognized independence of Uzbekistan on 16 January 1992. The sides established diplomatic relations on 12 August 1992. Uzbek President Islam Karimov visited Portugal in December 1996, which laid foundation for political dialogue between the countries.
Currently, Uzbekistan and Portugal have signed four intergovernmental agreements on cooperation in air transportation, tourism, mutual encouragement and protection of investments, as well as convention on avoiding double taxation and preventing tax evasion.
